Greta Gerwig and her husband and collaborator Noah Baumbach have been signed up to work on the upcoming Barbie movie, which stars Margot Robbie.

The pair will co-write the film, while Gerwig is also reportedly in talks to direct the live-action movie.

It’s another interesting move for the project, which has already undergone a series of creative changes since first being announced.

Barbie was initially set to star Amy Schumer in the lead role. After the casting announcement in 2016 the actress became the victim of trolling on social media and she later left the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Robbie was attached to star and produce the project back in January, although few fans would have predicted the involvement of indie favourites Gerwig and Baumbach.

The pair are known as key players in the mumblecore film movement – a subgenre of indie filmmaking that focuses on a more naturalistic, looser style of dialogue and acting.

Gerwig directed the Oscar-nominated Lady Bird in 2017, and is currently helming the upcoming film adaptation of Little Women. Baumbach has also directed the likes of Greenberg and Frances Ha, the latter having also been co-written with Gerwig.
