High school vampire teasing in Jennifer's Body

10 April 2012

"Hell is a teenage girl," says Needy (Amanda Seyfried), the shy and appropriately named best friend of Jennifer (Megan Fox), a beautiful high school tease who turns into a vampiric she-demon.

The pair live in Devil’s Claw, Minnesota, where Jennifer rules the roost until she sucks up to a visiting rock group who calmly sacrifice her to the Devil.

You might judge the film’s tone by the fact that the leader of the band says, just before stabbing her: "You don’t know how hard it is for an indie band to make it."

This is no ordinary splatter movie but one written by Diablo Cody, who penned Juno, and directed by Karyn Kusama, who made Girlfriends.

Its stylised teen dialogue and off-centre world view would have been refreshing if Cody and Kasuma had made up their minds about its purpose.

Is it about female empowerment or is it a slasher story? Probably both, but it doesn’t work as either.

This is despite a good performance from Seyfried and a good-looking one from Fox.
