Jig is shot with rare skill

The edge: they train manically and don’t always lose gracefully
10 April 2012

Documentary-maker Sue Bourne took on the closed world of Irish dancing competitions at her peril since the parents and children involved do not shrink from almost any dodge to win.

They train manically and don't always lose gracefully. This is the 40th Irish World Dancing Championships, held in Glasgow last year, where 3,000 people from all over the world descended on the city in hope.

Clad in wigs and dresses which often cost thousands of pounds, the competitors, from tiny tots to adolescents, have little time on stage and must make every second count. It's a quest for perfection that leads to tears or triumph, and Bourne shoots it all with rare skill.
