Time-lapse cameras turned on the American landscape deliver pictures that seem like a psychedelic trip - and were so used by pot-smoking hippies in 1983 when Godfrey Reggio's visually striking movie was premiered.

There's nothing much for the mind to bite on, and many of its effects have become over-used, but then, its appeal is directed entirely to the senses - the title is an Indian word that means 'unbalanced life'. Philip Glass contributes the resonating mood music.
