London's best film feasts

For a truly multi-dimensional experience, don't just watch a film, partake of accompanying themed food and drink
26 July 2013

See it, feel it, eat it. From screenings where you drink along with the characters, to a lavish banquet by Cinnamon Kitchen to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema, there are plenty of experiential film feasts in London.

For a truly multi-dimensional experience that goes beyond 3D, there is Edible Cinema. On arrival, people are presented with a tray of numbered boxes. During the film a number on the side of the screen lights up and that’s the cue to consume what’s inside that box. If the character sips a drink, so does the audience — but the creators have fun with more lateral concepts, too. When Clementine’s (Kate Winslet’s) hair changes colour in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the audience is presented with edible hair dye (polenta, tarragon and chicken stock — yum), and when she cries there’s sweet and salty tears laced with Bombay Sapphire. Next up is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer on August 17 and 18.

Those who want more than just their imaginations to be nourished should head to The Grub Club. On Saturday July 27 it is screening “The Pig Lebowski” on the 28th floor of Millbank Tower. Food is courtesy of pop-up The Wandering Chef, starting with White Russians and a themed dinner — think glazed ribs. There’s an afterparty too — all for £25. Screenings to look forward to are Fried and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Last of the Burritos.

The most lavish banquet of them all comes from Cinnamon Kitchen. On Friday July 26 it is rolling out the red carpet for Life of Pi in Devonshire Square and on the following day it’s screening The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. There will be popcorn-infused rum, canapés including stir-fried chicken with garlic and red chillies, and stir-fried baby aubergines with kadhai spices. Finish off with a debrief over cocktails — all for £35 per person. Now there’s no longer any need to feel self-conscious about the rustling sound of food eating in the cinema.
