Marius / Fanny - film review

Daniel Auteuil adapts two plays by Marcel Pagnol. The first sees a restless wannabe sailor fall in love with a local beauty, while the second reveals whether they get together

Actor Daniel Auteuil hearts Marcel Pagnol (the Provencal writer and film-maker best known for creating Jean de Florette). Having made his directing debut with The Well Digger’s Daughter (a remake of Pagnol’s 1940 film), Auteuil now adapts a pair of Pagnol’s plays. In the first, we meet restless wannabe sailor Marius (Raphael Personnaz) and sweet local beauty, Fanny (Victoire Belezy). In the second, we find out if they’ll wind up in each other’s arms. Auteuil plays Marius’s dad. Unless you’re a ginormous fan of the French actor, you will find it hard to stay awake.
