My boy Daniel is Bond

The new Bond: Daniel Craig
Daily Mail Reporter10 April 2012

The mother of British actor Daniel Craig yesterday confirmed the worst-kept secret in showbusiness - that he is to be the new James Bond.

Earlier this week, the Daily Mail exclusively revealed that the 37-year old actor has been chosen to replace Pierce Brosnan as 007.

Ahead of the official announcement today, his mother Carol could not hide her excitement yesterday and spoke of her delight.

'We are thrilled to bits,' said the 62-year old. 'This has come at a very good time in his career. I think he could bring something very interesting to the part. It will be life-changing. But I think he's old enough to handle it.'

Layer Cake star Craig got the job as Ian Fleming's handsome secret agent amid strong competition from Henry Cavill, Colin Farrell and Orlando Bloom.

It is believed he has signed a £10million one-film deal to star in Casino Royale, with options to extend it. Craig will be officially named as the action hero at lunchtime today aboard HMS President in London.

The announcement ends 18 months of speculation which saw Craig and Cavill become the final two on the shortlist.

The pair were auditioned again and tried on tuxedos to see how they would look in the quintessential Bond clothing.

Craig's first major role was on the small screen playing Geordie Peacock in the gritty BBC drama Our Friends In The North. He went on to play Paul Newman's vengeful son in the Sam Mendes movie Road To Perdition and later appeared in the film The Power Of One.

Since then, he has played opposite Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft - Tomb Raider and starred as poet laureate Ted Hughes to Gwyneth Paltrow's Sylvia Plath.

In recent months he has become known for his dalliances with A-list British celebrities. He had an on-off relationship with Kate Moss and was linked with Sienna Miller, his co-star in Layer Cake.
