An all but pointless 1979 remake of Murnau’s atmospheric masterpiece. Werner Herzog sticks closely to the original’s plot but his drama, especially in the town scenes, looks as glossy and stilted as a Brazilian soap. Meanwhile the phrase “pretty vacant” sums up leading lady Isabelle Adjani. At the beginning of the film we see mummies in a cave; they’re way more expressive than she is.
