Pimp feels slightly behind the times

Danny Dyer stars in 'mockumentary' Pimp
10 April 2012

Danny Dyer plays a key role in this mockumentary thriller about racial and sexual prejudice. Which is sort of ironic, because Dyer has recently become infamous for advising a reader of Zoo to cut his girlfriend ("then no one will want her").

No one could possibly blame Scottish director/leading actor Robert Cavanah for Dyer’s comments. But I saw the film before the furore broke out and, even then, Pimp’s anti-macho stance struck me as phoney. The film has other problems, not least the grating presence of Cavanah as the titular Soho hustler and over-familiar character arcs. Everything about this supposedly raw exposé feels like yesterday’s news.
