Jerry Schatzberg's film starring Al Pacino and Gene Hackman has been restored to its full glory

Jerry Schatzberg’s film, adored particularly by French critics, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1973 and has now been restored to its full glory. And that is considerable, at least visually, since Vilmos Zsigmond’s Cinemascope camerawork is superb. Al Pacino and Gene Hackman are the stars as a sailor and an ex-con heading from California to Pittsburgh hopefully to start a car-wash business. As a picture of blue-collar America the film is credible and compassionate. The best thing, in fact, that this almost forgotten director ever did.
