Sleep Tight - film review

Spanish horror that's more than a little chilling, with a terrific performance from Luis Tosar

The Spanish are pretty good at horror, and Jaume Balagueró who made the excellent [Rec] and [Rec]2, now regales us with the story of César, the suicidal doorman of a Barcelona apartment building who decides to wipe the smile off the face of Clara, a happy young woman whose cheerful demeanour makes his skin crawl.

Accordingly, he secretes himself under her bed at night, drugs her to sleep and has his way with her, even when her boyfriend is in the same bed (also drugged). Gradually, however, he gets a bit cocky and the nasty little girl next door finds him out. Or has he an escape plan up his sleeve?

The film is tightly controlled and contains a terrific performance from Luis Tosar as César. It’s eminently watchable, more than a little chilling and a league and a half better than most of its kind.
