Still a whiz of a Wiz

The 1939 classic may creak a tad now, but it still remains secure in the affections of millions. Now re-released with spanking new prints, its appeal is ageless.

Books have been written about the difficulties of making it - LB Mayer called Judy Garland his "little humpback" and encased her in uncomfortable corsets for the film.

Frank Morgan, the Wizard himself, was invariably drunk on set, and most of the other stars were grizzled veterans determined not to let Garland steal the picture.

But, despite all that, it's still wonderful and, as a children's film which adults love too, it is unsurpassed. Go again and see for yourself.
