A film fan with £60,000 to spare could soon be taking Batman’s batsuit home after a huge exhibition and auction of movie memorabilia launched today.

Christian Bale’s outfit from The Dark Knight Rises goes under the hammer this month, along with other lots including Keira Knightley’s wedding dress from Love Actually, which is expected to fetch £7,000, and a TIE fighter pilot’s helmet from the original Star Wars film valued at £70,000.

Stephen Lane, who organised the exhibition and subsequent sale, spent 10 months finding more than 500 lots, valued in excess of £1.5 million, for the sale. The Star Wars fan expects bidders to be fuelled by nostalgia and a growing awareness of the market as a place to invest. He said: “If you’re buying something like the batsuit you’re unlikely to want to take it home and wear it.

“What you are likely to want to have to do is have it in your home cinema or your office in a glass cabinet because you just want to marvel at it.”

The September 27 auction at BFI Imax in Waterloo is preceded by the free exhibition with about 300 lots on show. The auction can be followed at propstore.com/liveauction

The cinema, which is run by Odeon, is screening several films to coincide with the exhibition including the Dark Knight trilogy.
