Liked Robert Pattinson as Batman? Then you’re in luck, because everyone’s favourite emo superhero is heading back to our screens.

Warner Bros and DC announced on Tuesday night during CinemaCon in Las Vegas that their new film The Batman is officially getting a sequel, starring Pattinson as the caped crusader.

Speaking at the highly anticipated presentation, Warner Bro. movie chief Toby Emmerich told the crowd that “Matt [Reeves, The Batman’s filmmaker] took one of our most iconic and beloved superheroes and delivered a fresh vision.”

“Matt Reeves, Rob Pattinson and the entire team will be taking audiences back to Gotham with The Batman 2.”

Though no release date has been announced for the film, the news comes as no surprise to fans.

Released in early March, the first Batman film was a box office hit, taking in $759m and making it the highest-grossing film of 2022 so far.

The film saw Pattinson’s debut as Bruce Wayne, playing alongside Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, or Catwoman, and Andy Serkis as butler Alfred.

As Batman, he faced off against antagonists the Riddler, played by Paul Dano, and the Penguin, who was played by Colin Farrell.

The film was so successful that HBO Max commissioned a spin-off series starring Farrell’s character in the days after it opened. Called The Penguin, it will be produced by Reeves and will show the Penguin’s gradual rise through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal world.

In an announcement, Warner Media described it as a show that "expands upon the world filmmaker Matt Reeves has created for Warner Bros Pictures’ global blockbuster ‘The Batman’ and centers on the character played by Farrell in the film.”

Matt Reeves also made headlines earlier in the day for his speech at CinemaCon’s state-of-the-industry presentation, where he addressed theatres and praised them for keeping “a flicker of hope” alive during the pandemic.

“The success of The Batman was a true team effort,” he said.

“We could not have gotten to this place without … the theatrical experience. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As a lifelong fan of the movies, I treasure what you do,” he said, adding: “There’s a sanctuary to be found in the movies.”
