The board game from hell

10 April 2012

This must have seemed like a very good idea at the time, assuming that time to have been around 4am. A group of thrill-seeking students lounge around in a big, old house, seeking the ultimate buzz.

We quickly learn that they have tried all forms of sexual and druginduced frisson, and must extend their heroic search into uncharted territories. Someone suggests the ouija board might be the answer to their jaded prayers, and, the next moment, a nasty djinni has been summoned from somewhere in the very deepest bowels of hell. Those who have experienced communication problems on the internet and other modern gizmos might care to take note: the ouija board could be the way of the future.

The djinni cannot help but kill everyone in sight, for that is its nature, and drug-sozzled students must do everything in their power to make that a simple task, for that is theirs. Debut director Marcus Adams has cunningly set his piece in a gloomy half-light, so that we may not accurately gauge just how little money he had for special effects. When in doubt, he sends his camera whizzing down corridors at high speed in the hope of scaring up some suspense. Just for good measure, he then ends this bravura performance by tacking on not one, but two " surprise" endings. Come along, Mr Adams, it's time to put away childish board games.
