The Great Hip Hop Hoax - film review

The fantastic real-life story of Scottish rappers Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain who re-invented themselves as Californian bad boys
6 September 2013

Film-maker Jeanie Finlay has stumbled on a fantastic real-life story. Scottish rappers Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain re-invented themselves as Californian bad boys when they realised that was the only way to get a record deal. In 2003, London embraced Silibil n’ Brains. Manic appearances on MTV, a trip to the Brits and hours of studio time followed. So did drink and drug binges and mutual loathing. Neat cartoons, sophisticated home videos and brazen industry figures fill us in on the past, while the now barely recognisable duo get excited about the future. Ouch. Addictive stuff, but oh so bleak.
