Steve Carell is Burt, the egomaniac illusionist king of Las Vegas, in this comedy from Emmy award-winner Don Scardino. Which may just put you off from the start. But on the plus side, the illusionist’s partner, who loathes him, is Steve Buscemi, and Jim Carrey, Alan Arkin and James Gandolfini are also in the cast.

This is largely a showbiz parody, and as such seems to require everyone to act over the top as the reigning duo lose their ascendancy when Carrey’s street magician trumps their aces and casino mogul Gandolfini tires of their routines, built in the first place by Arkin’s veteran star.

It’s rather like a children’s movie camped up with adult bits and pieces. Or an American version of a good old British panto.
