The Joneses seemed like such a good idea

10 April 2012

Derrick Borte’s film is based on an excellent idea. A seemingly happy family arrive in a suburban town. They appear to have everything and soon the inhabitants want what they’ve got. Only they are not a real family but the latest example of guerrilla marketing.

David Duchovny and Demi Moore play the fake husband and wife, troubled by the realisation that their "son" (Ben Hollingsworth) is gay and their "daughter" (Amber Heard) has embarked on an affair with a married neighbour after trying to get into her would-be father’s bed. Meanwhile, husband and wife begin to like each other rather too much.

The film’s originality is never toughly enough worked out to make this more than just entertaining. But Duchovny and Moore do well, and Borte’s film is intriguing. With a sterner hand on the tiller, it could have been better.
