The Lobster today led the way at the British Independent Film Awards after being nominated in seven categories.

The film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is set in a future where single people are turned into animals if they fail to find a partner. It stars Colin Farrell, who was nominated for best actor, as well as Olivia Colman and Ben Whishaw, who received nods for their supporting roles.

Close behind were 45 Years and Macbeth, each of which received six nominations. High-Rise and Suffragette were also recognised, with four nods each.

Suffragette star Carey Mulligan was nominated for best actress in a category which also includes Marion Cotillard for Macbeth, while High-Rise’s Tom Hiddleston is in the running for best actor against Farrell, Macbeth’s Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy, who played both Kray brothers in biopic Legend.

The nominees for the Moët British Independent Film Awards were announced by Gemma Chan and Thomas Brodie-Sangster at The London Edition near Oxford Street. The winners will be announced at Old Billingsgate on December 6.
