Disney has made far better family films than this Peter Hedges effort, set in a small American town where a young couple, unable to have children, take in a small boy one stormy night who has a magical effect upon them.

Hedges both wrote and directed this less than magical apologia for Middle America, where everyone is jolly nice and sentiment rules the day. Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton are the couple and CJ Adams is the boy who turns out to be the wisest person in the story.

Rosemarie DeWitt and M Emmet Walsh are among the largely wasted supporting cast clearly supposed to appeal to adults as well as children but which won’t satisfy either for too long.
