There's trouble in store

10 April 2012

Greg Coolidge's film is set in a warehouse store which bears a strong resemblance to Wal-Mart and its plot concerns the increasingly desperate attempts of slacker Zack (Dane Cook) to become Employee of the Month.

Goodie-goodie and 17-times winner Vince (Dax Shepard) stands in his way. The prize is Jessica Simpson's blonde and well-busted Amy.

There are times when the movie manages to pin down the awful nature of the jobs people do to satisfy corporations that actually don't give a damn.

But it is only funny in patches, largely because Coolidge refuses to take the kind of risks a film like Little Miss Sunshine carried off so well. But at least the setting is original and just occasionally audacious. We have to be thankful for small mercies.
