To Get to Heaven You First Have to Die

10 April 2012

A lyrical odyssey involving an impotent man from Tajikistan — how’s that for a hard sell?

Yet director Djamshed Usmonov frames his story beautifully and we become interested in the fate of Kamal (Khurched Golibekov) despite ourselves.

He goes to the city and stalks/befriends Vera (Dinara Droukarova), a factory worker whose face resembles a bowl of ice-cold milk.

It turns out that she has a hot-tempered husband (Maruf Pulodzoda) and a bit of dialogue between them is violent —so quietly violent — that the shock stays with you for days.
