Apex Legends players have noticed a new splash screen appearing in the game, honouring and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

The splash screen is shown every time you boot up the game and has replaced the 'news' function which used to tell you about things happening in the game.

Respawn Entertainment has also added a tab on the bottom right of the game page which simply reads 'Black Lives Matter' and when clicked, takes you to an EA website.

"There is deep-rooted discrimination that is still unquestionably present towards the Black community, and it is unacceptable", the text reads.

It continues: "Racism, whether from an individual or an institution, should not exist in our society. We stand with all of our Black colleagues and partners, families and friends in the fight against racism and social injustice"

Many video game companies have been showing their support for Black communities this week, following the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota, who died in police custody after allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill.

Recently, Infinity Ward and Activision also added a Black Lives Matter screen to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, as well as promising to crack down on people using racist and incendiary name tags.

Apex Legends is developed by Respawn Entertainment, a studio owned by Electronic Arts.

EA has issued multiple statements and promises to support the Black community in the wake of George Floyd's death, the chief among them being $1 million in contributions to organisations fighting for racial justice in the US.

In a blog post on EA's official site, it also said it would be "deepening support of organisations working to stop systemic racial injustice, fight discrimination and protect human rights in the U.S. and beyond.

"In addition to our company contribution, we’ll double match any funds that you donate to these and any other local organizations through our YourCause program during the month of June," said the post.

The response to Mr Floyd's death has been fervid, with protests rippling across all 50 US states, and in cities across the world.

Several gaming events have been postponed so as not to detract from the important conversations about racial inequality and systemic racism taking place right now.
