After weeks of teases and speculation, Call of Duty 2020 has been officially confirmed by Activision, giving it the title Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Black Ops Cold War has been confirmed in a new video, whilst August 26 has been set as the official full reveal date.

The 'Know Your History' video doesn't actually show any gameplay, but it does set the stage for the overall narrative that we can expect to play through when the game comes out.

In the video, we see the real-life story of Soviet Russian defector Yuri Bezmenov, who escaped to the West in 1970.

The trailer also references “Perseus", which is the code name of a Soviet spy who is thought to have breached US intelligence during the height of the nuclear arms race.

In the description of the video on YouTube, Activision also said: "Know your history or be doomed to repeat it. Verdansk. August 26."

Obviously, Verdansk is the map used for CoD's battle royale mode Warzone so perhaps we can expect some sort of live event taking place, much like how Epic Games handles these moments in Fortnite.

Prior to this video, anspecial website was created which was our first real confirmation of the Cold War setting.

Initially, the website showed nothing but a countdown clock which then revealed an image, which had the following dates stamped as 14 August (when the teaser was revealed) and then 1961 - 1962.

Of course, the rest of the note was redacted.

While this period wasn't exactly filled with combat, we're sure that there will be some creative license and the game will have a classic Call of Duty spin

The website is now called pawntakespawn and there are multiple new hints towards the next Call of Duty game; you can even see what looks like a part of Warzone's Verdansk map in the background.

There's still plenty of rumours floating around about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War but this is the first official confirmation.

Fans seem to think that the game will be released in October or November this year, bringing with it an entirely new Warzone map, perhaps even destroying Verdansk outright.

There are also whispers of a zombie mode, which could be included with this new Black Ops title or even be implemented into Warzone somehow.

We do know for certain that when the game comes out, we can expect a heavily story-driven narrative surrounding this turbulent time in world politics.

Roll on August 26.
