While all the build-up around Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase was focused around Halo Infinite, it was the surprise Fable announcement at the end which really sealed the deal.

The new game is being billed as a reboot of the entire franchise and all were shown was a brief cinematic trailer announcing the title.

Fable has been around for years now and it was created under the guidance of the now-defunct Lionhead Studios. However, Playground Games will be helming this return of Fable, which is slightly odd considering it is also responsible for the Forza racing games.

Regardless, we're just happy to see Fable be announced after the somewhat disappointing last game came out in 2010.

Here is the trailer, in all of its witty and charming glory:

What is Fable?

The original Fable game was released on the original Xbox in 2004, from then it had two sequels, the last of which was Fable 3 released on the Xbox 360 in 2010.

Set in a fantasy world called Albion, Fable is an RPG which typically sees you take control of a male or female Hero character. But just because you're a 'hero', you didn't have to be good.

Word of your heroic or evil deeds spread as you continued through the game until you're famous or feared by the local populace.

It was astonishingly funny, witty and an exceedingly well-written game for its time and for those who played the first game specifically it holds a special place in their hearts.

Gameplay was fun and frankly hilarious and it offered a deliciously in-depth good and evil alignment system, which saw you eventually grow nefarious horns or sprout a halo depending on your whims.

It offered moral quandaries and hit serious notes at times, but the comedic value of the game is always fondly remembered.

This charm was tragically lost in subsequent games, which never managed to offer up the same experience and in fact, the sequels just kept getting worse.

Is the new Fable set in Albion?

The fantasy world of Albion charmed the heck out of people who played the first game and, from the trailer it seems likely that it will be set in Albion, perhaps during a different time period.

Fable 1, 2 and 3 were all separate from each other time-wise, but they all had a connecting thread running through the games.

Since this is a reboot of the franchise, it seems likely we would begin where the first game began during the Age of Heroes.

During the trailer, which you can view above, we got a look at what is almost certainly going to be some iteration of Bowerstone. This city has featured throughout all of Fable and it seems likely it will once again feature, perhaps as a major city hub.

There are rumours that this new game will be an MMO, but these are simply whispers at the moment.

Fable hasn't really been an open-world game in the traditional sense, but with the new Series X capabilities Fable could well be a fantastic open-world experience.

When will Fable be released?

Unfortunately, there was no release date with the trailer and all we really saw is a cinematic trailer. This could indicate there's no gameplay to properly show yet but it hints that the game is still very much in the early stages of production.

The good news? Fable won't just release on Xbox Series X, but it will also be coming to PC.
