The makers of Fortnite are hosting a new in-game tournament to take a swipe at Apple, following the removal of the game from the App Store.

Epic Games, who make the popular battle royale game, is in a lawsuit with Apple and Google around digital store policies, which saw the game pulled from the Apple Store and Google Play Store last week.

Epic Games tried to add a new direct payment system to Fortnite which violated Apple's policies and the game was subsequently taken offline.

In response, Epic is now suing Apple over this decision and has now launched something of a campaign against the company, using a new tournament taking place on August 23 where players will be able to compete to win "anti-Apple" prizes.

The hashtag #FreeFortnite is being used as the call to arms and a special website about the tournament has been set up.

"These are the final days of the entire Fortnite community’s ability to play together," reads a post on Epic Games' website.

"Apple has blocked Fortnite from the App Store, preventing players from updating to new versions. Players on iOS devices will be left behind on Chapter 2 - Season 3 while everyone else jumps into the Chapter 2 - Season 4 launch on August 27".

To take part in the tournament, all you have to do is navigate to the in-game Compete tab to see when the event starts for your region and you can drop in during the specific times by choosing the #FreeFortnite Cup Playlist.

During this time, players will have the opportunity to win prizes in the #FreeFortnite Cup, with prizes like a skin of an evil-looking apple, a free hat and even an entire console, gaming laptop or phone so you have another way to play Fortnite.

Epic notes in its blog post about this event that people who play Fortnite on iPhones won't be able to get access to the next season of Fortnite, which is supposed to begin on August 27. iOS users won't be able to update the game and that means it will be an out of date version which cannot be used to play online, if at all.

To combat this, Epic has suggested that current players on iOS should consider using a different platform to play the game, with the options being on the PS4, Xbox, Switch, PC, Mac and Android phones.
