Wireless festival-goers spotted something amiss on social media yesterday morning. As headliner DJ Khaled posted pictures of himself on holiday, fans started to speculate: just how quickly could his private jet get from Mexico to Finsbury Park?

Not quick enough was the simple answer, as news came through that he wouldn’t be appearing, blaming “travel issues”. Festival-goers were mysteriously promised a “special” replacement, though no details were given.

That evening, Giggs’ set abruptly ended after what had been one of the day’s stand-out performances. Moments later, the opening bars of KMT — his collaboration with Drake — sounded and fans surged from all corners of the park towards the stage: the new, surprise headliner was Canadian superstar Drake.

“I heard that somebody might have cancelled their performance today… I’m going to ask London permission, can I run a little set now to make up for that s*** or what?” Drake asked. Fans bounced wildly in the affirmative. Hits from new album Scorpion dominated, with I’m Upset, God’s Plan and Mob Ties all thrilling.

Energetic American hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd’s summer-tinged hits, Rick Ross and Lil Uzi Vert had earlier contributed much to the party atmosphere but ultimately the day belonged to Drake.

“I live and die for London England,” he said, before pointedly adding: “I was in the middle of my vacation — I left to be with each and every one of you tonight.”
