Two years ago the Canadian singer-songwriter Kiesza suffered a bad head injury in a car accident. Having taken time off, during which she wasn’t sure whether she’d even walk or talk again, let alone create music, she has re-emerged stronger and gutsier than ever.
One might expect a collection of sombre, delicate, contemplative songs to make up her new album. Instead they’re punchy, dance-heavy and filled with synths that transport you back to the Eighties.
The electronic-leaning pop sound is instantly uplifting, bringing the feeling of being in a club on a summer night straight through your headphones. The dancefloor-ready anthems are broken up with more balladic songs — with its rousing chorus, Love Never Dies could be the theme tune to the next James Bond film.
Lyrically, though sometimes earnest, the songs cover the emotions Kiesza felt during her recovery: loss, isolation, frustration. “Dance with the devil up inside of my head,” she sings on All Of The Feelings. Kiesza has created a pristine piece of positivity that is much needed in 2020.
