Legendary jazz singer Salena Jones to celebrate 70-year career with London show

Seventh heaven: Salena Jones
Jochan Embley13 September 2018

Renowned jazz vocalist Salena Jones is to celebrate entering her seventh decade in the music business with a performance in London.

Jones, 88, whose list of past collaborators includes Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughan, will mark the occasion in the Purcell Room at Southbank Centre on September 28.

She will be backed by a 22-piece orchestra, conducted by her husband, Keith Mansfield, performing a mix of blues, jazz standards, big band and more.

It will be a night representative of her huge musical catalogue, which is made up by no less than 43 albums.

Her music has taken her around the world, but Jones has a special relationship with London. In the 60s she completed a seven-week residency at Ronnie Scott’s — the longest in the legendary jazz club’s history, even to this day — and has often returned to play in the capital.

Before the Southbank date, Jones will play twice at Soho Jazz Club on September 14 and 15, with a date at Ronnie Scott’s on October 21.
