Astral soul-funk duo Lion Babe have always known their luck would win out. Aged 17, lead singer Jillian Hervey’s car was crushed by a falling tree during a freak tornado in New York, yet she escaped with just a scratch. Thirteen years on, she and bandmate Lucas Goodman release their album Cosmic Wind today, whipping up a gentler breeze.
Advice you’d give your younger self?
Keep taking risks, and don’t be so wrapped up in the present. What that means is knowing that the risks you take tend to work out even if they’re daunting at first.
Best hangover cure?
A smoothie with vegetables and all the fruits, slurped down really quickly. Avocado, kale and bananas are the key.
What would you do with a time machine?
Go full Back to the Future to see what both sets of parents were like in their twenties. I think the universe would explode.
Craziest stage moment?
Our last big festival was in Dubai when we were sandwiched between Mos Def and Nas. You’re just like, how did we get here? It’s amazing to perform with people who are titans in the industry.
Guiltiest pleasure?
Binge-watching Queer Eye, or if getting glammed, The Wendy Williams Show.
A secret skill?
Lucas is a phenomenal dog-walker. Jillian? A charcoal draughtswoman extraordinaire.
Snack packet of choice?
Salted popcorn.
Most dedicated fan?
One person has a tattoo that says Lion Babe on one forearm and Astral Roar, the title of our first album, on the other.
