Miles Mosley - Uprising, review: ‘Fiercely beautiful songs of love and disappointment’

New release: Miles Mosley releases his latest cross-genre adventure

With a style often described as Jimi Hendrix playing upright bass for Prince, singer and instrumentalist Miles Mosley comes steaming out of the Los Angeles jazz scene to steal the crown from Kendrick and Kamasi (here on sax) with his latest project, a cross-genre adventure recorded with seismic collective the West Coast Get Down.

Fiercely beautiful songs of love and disappointment rub shoulders with to-the-barricades-style rallying cries: the funky Young Lion, a tale of a young woke man, finishes with a detonation of bass riffs; Abraham, with its ancient-to-future vibe, feels like a new jazz standard.

What with choirs, a full orchestra, effects pedals and that attacking, big-bottomed bass, this is album-of-the-year stuff.

Mosley plays Love Supreme, 30 June - 2 July.
