MS MR first emerged as a secretive buzz band with a savvy approach to social media. When the US duo’s identities were revealed, it turned out singer Lizzy Plapinger had a pop pedigree. While studying at New York’s exclusive Vassar College (with MS MR’s Max Hershenow) she co-founded the Neon Gold label, which has released Charli XCX, Ellie Goulding and Marina & the Diamonds. Plapinger was actually raised in London, which probably explains why MS MR sound like superior electropop made in Shoreditch. Their glorious second album features Florence-style anthems (Painted, Reckless), sultry disco ballads (Leave Me Alone, Cruel) and a few eccentric moments. Plapinger belts out How Does it Feel as if she’s got a point to prove. MS MR already have a strong claim to be one of the great boy-girl pop duos.
