Not3s review: A musical birthday bash to remember

Birthday boy: Not3s brings the celebrations to Camden

“So this is my birthday and I wanted to do a little party,” Not3s shouted to a deafening audience. As twentieth-birthday celebrations go, it probably doesn’t come much better than playing a sold-out gig to a crowd who bounce along to your every word.

Not3s darted to the stage for a breathless set opener, just moments after appearing in the balcony with his fans. “It wouldn’t be right to do this song without NSG,” he screamed, as he teased the opening bars to Pushing Up; NSG soon emerged.

Many more collaborations followed as guest after guest filled the stage all evening, but it was an infectious, collaborative performance with teenage rapper SL that impressed the most.

Not3s confidently fused rap, dancehall, afro and hip-hop, never missing a bar or beat with his excellent four-piece band. Hasta la Vista and cult smash Addison Lee were adored by his young fans, as were the rest of his birthday celebrations. There were balloon drops, glitter cannons, record disk awards, multiple birthday cakes and expensive birthday gifts presented by Tinie Tempah.

The celebrations certainly got a bit silly, as illustrated when security couldn’t keep up with all the special birthday guests and a scuffle broke out on stage.

This was certainly a musical birthday bash to remember; you can only imagine what his twenty-first will be like.
