OneRepublic - Oh My My review: 'Hard to avoid the sense of self-indulgence'

New album: OneRepublic's Oh My My

If the album format is to survive the depleted attention spans of the digital age it will be no thanks to OneRepublic.

The US band’s bloated fourth record runs to 16 tracks.

Whether it was arrogance or indecision it’s a baffling move by frontman Ryan Tedder, who’s also an established producer for Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson and U2.

Oh My My underlines Tedder’s technical ability in the studio, particularly when he oversees the special guests: a ghostly Peter Gabriel on AI, the always intriguing Santigold on the uplifting NbHD and Parisian dance duo Cassius for the title track’s thudding groove.

Elsewhere, there are a few nice touches on songs that share some of Maroon 5’s swagger but it’s hard to avoid the sense of self-indulgence, especially when Tedder starts singing about his conversations with God.
