Ray Davies has surprised the music world after announcing that The Kinks are planning to reunite after 20 years apart.

The band has endured one of the longest feuds in UK music since disbanding in the late 90s, but now appear to have buried the hatchet.

Davies revealed the news in an interview with Channel 4 News, stating that he was "making a new Kinks album” with brother Dave Davies and Mick Avory.

"The trouble is, the two remaining members, my brother Dave and Mick, never got along very well. But I've made that work in the studio and it's fired me up to make them play harder, and with fire," Davies said.

The group last performed together in 1996 and split following rising tensions between the two Davies brothers.

Speaking about plans for a reunion, Davies revealed that the move was inspired by seeing the Rolling Stones' recent UK tour.

He said: "It won't be well-organised like the Rolling Stones… The Kinks will probably be playing the local bar."

The Kinks formed in north London in 1964. They went on to release a total of 24 studio albums and had hits with singles such as You Really Got Me, Tired Of Waiting For You, Lola and Waterloo Sunset.

The group's history and tempestuous relationships inspired the successful musical Sunny Afternoon, which ran at London's Harold Pinter Theatre in 2014.

Davies has enjoyed a successful solo album in the years since the band split, releasing the double album Americana in 2017.
