Fundraiser: Ali Campbell of UB40

UB40 have released a charity cover version of Lean On Me, with all proceeds from the track going to the NHS in its battle against coronavirus.

The classic Bill Withers song, which has become a symbol of solidarity during the pandemic, was chosen by the band because it “encapsulated everything that’s going on at the moment”.

UB40 singer Ali Campbell said: “We’re all needing to lean on our NHS heroes. We wanted to make our contribution to this great cause; covering this song was the perfect way to show our appreciation.”

Money raised through the release will be given to the NHS Charities Together Urgent Covid-19 Appeal.

You can listen to their rendition below:

It comes after singer Michael Ball joined forces with Captain Tom Moore — the 99-year-old veteran whose walks around the garden have helped to raise more than £26m for the NHS — to release a cover of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Elsewhere, newly reformed boy band JLS became the latest act to announce plans of a free concert for NHS workers later this year.
