Vein – The Chamber Music Effect review: ‘typically leftfield compositions’

The Swiss trio highlight and subvert their classical backgrounds
Free-jazz trip: Swiss trio Vein
Jane Cornwell21 April 2017

The Swiss trio Vein has been playing for more than a decade now, showcasing their elegant hipster stylings via collaborations with American jazz icons Greg Osby and Dave Liebman and a touring schedule that has taken them across four continents.

This album of original, typically leftfield compositions both highlights and subverts the threesome’s classical backgrounds, with pianist Michael Arbenz giving recognisable structures new and startling angles on tracks including the slow-burning Prelude and the airy, lovely Poeme de Nuit.

Drummer Florian Arbenz, Michael’s twin, takes the trio on a free-jazz trip with In Media Res; bassist Thomas Lähns is in his rocking element on the fun-filled Ballad of the Monkeys.

They play Pizza Express Jazz Club with Greg Osby on May 22.
