Dan Croll might be on the way to getting lots of five-star reviews from intimidated weedy journalists thanks to his background as a promising rugby player. An injury in his late teens meant that professional sport's loss was pop's gain, as the Stoke lad opted instead for a Music degree at Liverpool's Institute for Performing Arts, where he once got to play his songs for Sir Paul McCartney.

Macca isn’t the only one who’s given the thumbs up – his early single From Nowhere has been a bloggers' favourite for its mix of lo-fi organ, big beats and extreme catchiness. Another single, Compliment Your Soul, shares a bright Afrobeat sound with two of his influences, Paul Simon and Vampire Weekend, while the newest song, In/Out, is the most charming of the bunch. Doing it all himself, his mix of electronics and acoustic instruments is made for the summer. Though a debut album isn’t coming til early next year, he’s playing in London next week.
