As the nights draw in it feels right to be listening to frosty music from Scandinavia, which we’ll all be doing when the Ja Ja Ja Festival takes over the Roundhouse with a veritable smorgasbord of Nordic musicians on November 8 and 9. The standout act for me is this Helsinki newcomer and part-time tram driver, who arrives a few weeks later for an attached event.
He’s released a lot of material in Finland over the past few years and is now going international thanks to a new deal with a subsidiary of Arctic Monkeys’ label, Domino. The first music ahead of a spring album is December’s Dreamzone EP, four tracks on which his low, slow-motion voice contrasts with the sprightly electronic pop beneath. No End, a hazily beautiful duet with his fellow Finn, Suad Khalifa, is the standout song, streaming online now, though it’s more fun to talk about the second track, which is called Uu uu uu. Uu ought to see him live at the end of this month.
