We Out Here 2019: Five things to do at Gilles Peterson's new festival

Gilles Peterson’s first ever UK festival arrives in Cambridgeshire this weekend.

The label boss and DJ has curated a line-up packed full of artists from the worlds of jazz, dance music and beyond, set to be played out on the lush countryside site formerly occupied by Secret Garden Party.

It’s set to be an eclectic festival, and not just in terms of music. Supper clubs, yoga sessions, record fairs, film screenings and more will be dotted around the grounds.

These are five things you need to do to make the most of We Out Here.

Explore UK jazz and club culture

The line-up is a broad reflection of Peterson’s own musical history, straddling both the dynamic UK jazz scene and the dance music that’s been inspired by the genre past and present. The live portion of the line-up is spearheaded by saxophonist Gary Bartz, who will be joined on stage by singer Dwight Trible and artist Saul Williams — a fascinating prospect. The Comet Is Coming, Nubya Garcia, KOKOROKO and Kojey Radical are among the other acts set to perform. Over on the clubbing side, Theo Parrish, Objekt, Call Super, HAAi and Peterson himself lead an eclectic bill. It’ll all be spread across eight stages, from the lakeside Main Stage to the leafy Forest.

Watch a music film

Film buffs are well catered for at We Out Here, with a number of filmmakers heading to the festival to exhibit their music-themed flicks. Doc ‘n’ Roll Film Festival will be in residence, hosting a range of music films and accompanying screen talks, while Somethin’ Else founder Jez Nelson will be showing some of his favourite music TV films. Commune, the immersive cinema company, will also be setting up shop.

Go crate-digging

Peterson is a renowned crate-digger, so it seems only right that festival-goers at We Out Here should be able to go on the hunt for their own vinyl gems. A record fair, organised by label Near Mint and online vinyl marketplace Discogs, will bring together independent labels, dealers and shops — before transforming into a dancefloor when night falls. Rough Trade will also be selling some of its most popular records, while also hosting Q&As and album signings throughout the weekend.

Refuel at a charity supper club

Chef Imad Alarnab will be bringing the flavours of his native Syria to We Out Here with a three-course supper club, with seven sittings across the weekend. Expect an array of homemade sharing plates, spread out across a communal table. A chunk of the proceeds will be donated to Help Refugees. Elsewhere, east London restaurant Brawn will be in residence from 9am-9pm each day, serving up its Europe-inspired dishes, with a wine bar open later into the evening. Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, Urban Falafel and Anna Mae’s will be among the food stalls dotted around the sight.

Take part in a yoga session

Festivals aren’t all about dancing and drinking. For some much-needed restoration, head to the yoga yurt, which will be running wellness sessions throughout the weekend. Any aches and pains will be banished with one of the on-site massages, while a visit to the gong bath will help you unwind. After something livelier? Join the Run Dem Crew as they hotfoot it around the festival site with one of their running clubs.
