Superstar artist Andy Warhol will be celebrated in a major new Tate Modern exhibition.

The show, planned for next spring, will tell the story of how a shy provincial outsider came to dominate the 20th century art world rubbing shoulders with stars including Mick Jagger and David Bowie.

Among works likely to go on show will be examples of his trademark pop art style which famously used images of Campbell’s soup cans and Coca-cola bottles alongside iconic individuals such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.

Born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, the son of an immigrant coal miner became one of the best-known names in modern art and his eccentric persona and instantly recognisable silver wig made him one of the most famous faces of the 20th century.

His work is held in major galleries around the world and sells for vast sums when it comes to auction — six years ago his print Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) sold for $105.4 million.

Warhol was also instrumental in the career of the rock band The Velvet Underground — famously designing the cover of their first album which included a peel-able banana skin — and also designed album covers for The Rolling Stones.

Tate Modern will also present a show looking back over the career of Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen who has gone on to become one of Hollywood’s hottest properties after making a string of successful films including the Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave.

Other planned exhibitions announced today include Tate Britain’s survey of British Art in the 17th and 18th centuries and a retrospective of the artist Aubrey Beardsley whose erotic illustrations made him a celebrity in Victorian London.
