Queen and Country

Zena Alkayat5 April 2012

The exhibition Queen And Country is a project by Steve McQueen commemorating British soldiers killed in the current Iraq conflict, by creating postage stamps bearing a portrait of each serviceman killed. The facsimile stamp sheets bring the death of these troops into people's everyday lives to eerily moving effect.

Sadly, McQueen doesn't include the Iraqi military fatalities; similarly, the majority of the work from War Artists In The Middle East comes from the museum's own collection and government bodies, and excludes Middle Eastern artists. This purely British take on foreign affairs is ultimately these exhibitions' undoing: reaffirming the arrogant stance of the West when reflecting world affairs.

Queen and Country, until Jan 6, Imperial War Museum, Lambeth road SE1. Daily 10am to 5.30. Free. Tel: 020 7416 5000. Tube: Lambeth North/Elephant and Castle
