It's life, Jimeoin, as we know it

Devilishly funny: Jimeoin is a terrific observational stand-up with a laser-guided eye for human foibles
10 April 2012

While other comedians break boundaries, twist taboos and fiddle with formats, Australia-based Irishman Jimeoin shows that there is life in observational humour yet.

There is little groundbreaking in his latest set, it is simply an object lesson in effortlessly crowd pleasing geniality.

At his best, Jimeoin is a stand-up anthropologist, dissecting the minutiae of human behaviour like a witty, whimsical Desmond Morris.

A highlight is his brilliant imitation and deconstruction of the way we present ourselves publicly, assuming a cool pose in the mirror then trying to hold it as we enter the bar.

Gags are delivered in such a seductive whisper resistance is futile. His routine about the correct way to use an Oyster card, shimmying to the ticket barrier as if in a Broadway musical, should be adopted as London's official travel policy.

There might be predictable fillers, such as how the Taliban are taking the heat off the Irish, but these are tiny quibbles in a show all about those small things in life that make one smile. Conventional comedy so deceptively bright it almost blinds you.
