Kids Week: How to get free London theatre tickets for your kids this summer

It can be tough getting everybody together for a matinee and, even when you can, taking the whole family to the theatre is a pretty big strain on the purse.

Thankfully, a major initiative called Kids Week kicks off just in time for the summer holidays, offering a chance to take the young'uns to a show for free. Throughout August, more than 40 of London’s most popular shows are participating and helping families to get into theatre.

For every full-paying adult, a child (16 and under) will get a free ticket. Two further half-price child tickets will also be available, so you can take the whole family. To top it off, there are no booking fees.

This is a great opportunity to see those big West End spectacles you might have missed: Wicked, Aladdin, Chicago, Dreamgirls, Kinky Boots, Matilda, The Lion King and School of Rock are all participating.

Best theatre for kids in London

Enjoy slapstick with The Play That Goes Wrong and A Comedy About A Bank Robbery, and a bit of a dance with Strictly Ballroom and St Petersburg Ballet Theatre’s Swan Lake.

It may be the holidays, but there’s still space for a little education (of the fun kind) in the form of Horrible Histories - Barmy Britain. Romans, Tudors and Georgians - no one escapes the spotlight in Part Four of the series.

There are also a number of shows that are perfect for under 5s. The Tiger Who Came To Tea, a musical based on the wonderful picture book, comes to the Piccadilly Theatre, and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is at the Lyric.

As well as the shows, there’s a jam-packed programme of activities and workshops. Learn the Aladdin’s moves, join the Little Mermaid cast for the warm up, take a ghost tour around the home of The Woman in Black or go backstage at The Mousetrap.

Kids eat free at some nearby restaurants, so you can make sure no one’s hungry when the curtain rises.

Tickets for Kids Week go on sale on June 12 at 10am.
