Mapping marvellous

Chloe Scott|Metro10 April 2012

Davis's work challenges your concept of the Internet. The pioneering New Yorker made his name creating commercial websites before moving on to his own experimental projects, including praystation.com and once-upon-a-forest.com.

Whittled down to six shimmering flat screens, this exhibition displays the Flash artist's evolving and shifting worlds. While Opal Clouds blossoms radiantly, enticing you to enter its embryonic state and the Japanese-influenced Ricepaper flickers with tender slabs of pink, other pieces are more menacing.

Mapmaker overwhelms; its ominous silence bursts abruptly into fast electronica that's choreographed flawlessly with a riot of thick black lines (think animated Kandinsky). Vectorslam restructures itself into jagged greens and yellows reminiscent of shattered glass.

There are no explanations - just the pixels and your imagination. Each frame is unique and sequences move arbitrarily; Davis's poetry lies in his codes. But while Web anoraks may revel in his technical genius, the rest of us can quite simply explore an array of sensory roller coasters.
