Brian Friel's Translations set to return to National Theatre's Olivier stage following sold out run

Set to return: Ciaran Hinds in Translations last year
Catherine Ashmore

Ian Rickson’s acclaimed production of Brian Friel’s Translations is set to return to the National Theatre.

Performances will begin in October following a sold-out run last year, with Ciaran Hinds reprising his role as local schoolmaster Hugh.

Judith Roddy and Seamus O'Hara will also return to the cast, with other roles set to be announced.

Friel’s 1980 play explores an Irish community which is disrupted by the arrival of British army officers tasked with translating all of the place names into English.

The National’s production was shortlisted for a number of categories at last year’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards, including Best Director for Ian Rickson.

It was also announced that Roy Alexander Weise would return to the National Theatre to direct Athol Fugard’s ‘Master Harold’...and the Boys, following his hit production of Natasha Gordon’s Nine Night.

Other new productions include a stage adaptation of Kate Grenville’s The Secret River and a transfer of Ben Weatherill’s Jellyfish from the Bush Theatre, with Sarah Gordy returning to the play.
