The Old Vic is set to go into partnership with two south London town halls as part of a multi-million-pound deal to help fund its new education centre.

Lambeth, where the theatre is based, and Southwark, the neighbouring council, are expected to vote for a plan that would lend the theatre £3.75 million each towards the £12 million cost.

The proposed five-storey Annex next to the theatre in Waterloo is due to open in 2022 and would house the theatre’s extensive community programme, which works with 10,000 people in both boroughs.

Kate Varah, executive director of the Old Vic, said: “Together with the councils, we will ensure that this vibrant theatre sustains financially and that its wide-reaching social engagement is so deeply embedded that there can never be any doubt about the value of the Old Vic to those it serves.”

The theatre aims to pay back the loans over 10 years.

The Old Vic raised £650,000 towards the developments at a Midsummer party last month, attended by Kim Cattrall, Adrian Lester, Dame Joan Collins and Lolita Chakrabarti.
