Penchant for the surreal

Madcap: We Are Klang are noisy, surreal and occasionally violent
Sharon Lougher|Metro10 April 2012

We Are Klang are a sketch troupe unlike every other group doing the rounds. Yes, they have sketches and yes, they have the requisite guitar.

But they also have Greg Davies, a lively man-mountain who bears an uncanny resemblance to Rik Mayall. He promises much, opening proceedings by booming "roll-up, roll up" like a carny hawker. And this madcap hour delivers.

Klang's series of bizarre ideas teeter on just the right side of chaos. There's one cracker of a sketch about a mind-reading mentalist called Darren (or is it Derren?) Chillblain, who can't read minds and is bonkers.

His attempt at a "mind swap" with Marek Larwood - a fine comic in his own right - is a superbly crude swipe at those who tout the profession for real.

Other sketches betray their penchant for the surreal, and in The World Insult Championship, they graciously let the audience have the last laugh. It's a wonder goggle-eyed Larwood and the third member of this trio, skinny, scruffy Steve Hall, don't go home with a complex.

Klangbang is noisy, stupid, not very PC and occasionally violent. Like being walloped on the head with a large inflatable hammer - but in a good way.

Until Aug 27 (except Mon), Pleasance Courtyard (V33), 8.40pm, £8.50 to £9.50, £7 to £8 concs. www.pleasance.co.uk
