Rather a lengthy Crossing

The Highway Crossing is a play from Estonia, and, by golly, in Estonia they don't do things by halves. At least half an hour longer than it need be, the piece has a Hollywood hook, fairy-tale logic, a touch of social satire and some Brecht effect thrown in for good measure. At times it grips, at others one thinks we have enough bad, homegrown plays.

Young couple Laura and Roland seek shelter at the lonely forest dwelling of the mentally disturbed Oswald, who immediately betrays an obsession with Laura, and offers Roland $1 billion (or 1,000 Demi Moores) for his soon-to-be fiancée. Alliances are formed, broken and reformed in the twin quests for Oswald's money and Laura's heart. Greed and shallowness are exposed, while Oswald grows as a figure of sympathy, a beautiful dreamer in thrall to the miracle that made him rich.

But sparse events are padded out with far too much dialogue. It's not wholly unenjoyable - a camp cameo at the close from fourth hand Archie Whyld is particular fun - but it is a muddle, and terribly extended. I suppose nights can be long in the Baltic.

Until 14 July. Information: 020 7503 1646.
