The show won't go on without Harry Potter star

Daniel Radcliffe's play Equus is closing in June - just three months after it opened to critical acclaim.

The surprise move follows reports that directors were looking for a new actor to succeed Harry Potter star Radcliffe, 17, at the end of his run.

Peter Shaffer's classic play will go on a 12-week national tour after it closes on June 9 at London's Gielgud Theatre.

The tour, for which casting is yet to be announced, will open at the Theatre Royal Bath on August 28.

A Broadway production will open next year, with an Australian show expected to follow.

Spokesman Peter Thompson said that Equus had recouped its investment in a record-breaking eight weeks of business since it opened just over three months ago on February 27.

But he said director Thea Sharrock wanted "to go out on a high".

The play has been a sell-out, thanks partly to Radcliffe's adoring fans.

It was recently reported that Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell was set to strip off for the London stage to succeed Radcliffe, after film star Orlando Bloom was said to have turned down the role.

Radcliffe, along with Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, is set to return as the teenage wizard in the final Potter films - Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows.
